West Virginia Lottery to Launch Statewide “Random Acts of Lottery” Campaign

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (August 7, 2014) – The West Virginia Lottery today announced a robust advertising, social media and grassroots marketing campaign that is designed to inspire a “pay-it-forward” spirit among Lottery players. The campaign, titled Random Acts of Lottery, invites West Virginia Lottery players with any West Virginia Lottery online game ticket (Powerball®, Mega Millions®, Hot Lotto®, Cash25, Daily 4 and the Daily 3 games) to share the good things they would do for others if they win money playing the West Virginia Lottery.

The Lottery will randomly select four (4) submissions entered via the campaign microsite at, and award the winning persons making the submission with a cash prize of $10,000, and provide up to $25,000 to the nominated individuals to fulfill their act of kindness.  The new Random Acts of Lottery microsite will launch with the campaign and will be live on Friday, August 8, 2014.

“Winning the West Virginia Lottery can certainly be a life-changing opportunity for our players, but we don’t often hear about how it changes the lives of those around them, including their community,” said John C. Musgrave, Director of the West Virginia Lottery. “We want to encourage and inspire that spirit here in West Virginia through these Random Acts carried out across our state, and we recognize that inspiring that spirit can start with our winners. We are committed to bringing our players generous ideas to life and look forward to receiving your thoughtful ideas on how to make a difference.”

In addition to the ideas submitted by Lottery players, the West Virginia Lottery will be carrying out its own Random Acts of Lottery in various cities across West Virginia. These Acts will include various “gifts” at Lottery retail locations around the state.

The official launch of the campaign will take place during “Lottery Day” at the West Virginia State Fair on Friday, August 8, 2014. Representatives with the Lottery will be performing Random Acts throughout the day, both at the Lottery booth and throughout the Fair, including entry ticket and prize giveaways, offering attendees items like sunscreen and water bottles and encouraging them to pass them on, and capturing Fair-goers’ Random Act submissions via video.

The random acts will be in addition to the popular enhanced second-chance drawing, Lottery Raceway game and Drop-N-Win bonuses that are popular among State Fair visitors during “Lottery Day.” Lottery Day will conclude with a concert by country music recording artists “Little Big Town” at the State Fair Grandstand that is sponsored by the Lottery.

The campaign will include a 30-second television spot demonstrating just a few examples of Random Acts, including helping bring a soldier home or buying your dad a new truck. It can be viewed at and will begin airing statewide in September. Other campaign elements will include out-of-home marketing, which will offer ideas for Random Act submissions.

An extensive social media campaign will round out the effort, where anyone is invited to use the hashtag #RandomActsofLottery on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram to share their idea for a Random Act. The Lottery will also consider these submissions for fulfillment in the coming months. To learn more, follow West Virginia Lottery on Facebook (, Twitter (@WV_Lottery) and Instagram (WV_Lottery).
